Lean UX Canvas Template

Updated: Jul 15, 2021

Lean UX helps teams find and solve business problems through testing hypotheses. Lean UX is hyper-focused on the pure user experience and less on the number of deliverables. Thus, your team must collect feedback as early in the design process as you can: the discovery phase of project research, design, and planning. The Lean UX canvas creates a culture of rapid, iterative cycles without sacrificing quality.

The Lean UX Canvas is a tool created by UX consultant Jeff Gothelf, that acts as a practical guide to both understand the current scenario of business and user needs.

Complete the Lean UX canvas by filling out eight key elements, per Jeff's descriptions, in this order:

  1. Business Problem: What problem does the business have that you're trying to solve?

  2. Business Outcomes: How will you know that you solved the problem? What will you measure?

  3. Users: What types of users (i.e. personas) and customers should you fovcus on first?

  4. User Outcomes & Benefits: Why would you users seek out your product or service? What benefit would they gain from using it? What behavior change can we observe that tells us they've achieved their goal?

  5. Solutions: What can we make that will solve our business problem and meet the needs of our customers at the same time? List the product, feature, or enhancement ideas.

  6. Hypotheses: Combine the assumptions from 2, 3, 4 & 5 into the following statement: "We believe that X business outcome will be achieved if Y user attains Z benefit with A feature.”

  7. What's the most important thing we need to learn first: For each hypothesis from Box 6, identify its riskiest assumptions Then determine the riskiest one right now. This is the assumption that will cause the entire idea to fail if it's wrong.

  8. Experimentation: Brainstorm the experiments you would need to run to test your hypothesis or hypotheses.
